DROUGHT AND FLOOD

DROUGHT AND FLOOD

Drought and flood both problems are related to the water. One is due to lack of water and other is due to excess of water. In summer drought kills many people while in rainy season flood kills many more. Drought and flood together is a very big problem that India faces today. Though the solution is simple but it takes a strong will to tackle but the problems all together can be taken care of.

Problem and Reason-
A very big reason for drought and flood together is the climate change. With the global warming the rate of melting of glaciers increased significantly thus flood to Himalayan Rivers and drought to the seasonal rivers - originated from underground water.
A good amount of rain is much needed for our agricultural based economy. The heavy rain is the most important factor of the destruction. It causes flood as well as landslide. If  someone knows how we can store the water of monsoon season and utilize it in the times of drought, we can save thousands of farmers who commit suicide due to drought and many more people who die due to flood in the monsoon. The main problem is where to store this huge amount of water that falls from sky in rainy season. To be honest this is not the real problem we just have to make big giant containers like japan does, but the real problem is that there is a limit to the dimensions of the container we can make. So we must find a way to solve this problem in modern way.

The solution-
How other countries solve it-
For flood Japan made underground container to store the water.
In some parts of America flood is tackled by making water bed around the house.
In some countries underground tunnel is used for flood water to pass.
In India the interlinking of rivers was proposed by the first prime minister of India but still not implemented today.
In this way we can see that there is no particular solution provided to tackle both problems simultaneously. Both the problems are related so there should be one solution applicable for both.
How we should do it-
To store such huge amount of water we don’t need very big containers because Earth can store water too - the underground water.
Japan stores its rainy water in very big container which are built underground and releases after the rain is over. Japan can do that but it takes very high manpower as well as financial support to build that kind of containers inside the ground. This method is not sustainable for long run. If the water to be stored beneath the earth many problem related to the drought and flood can be solved together. The water level of earth will increase which will enhance the production of many crops. This technique is not new our ancestors used to use this kind of technique. They made Lakes and Ponds in very large amount with charges the underground water. The quantity of water on the ground due to rain during the monsoon season is same as before but back in the time, the rainy water goes beneath ground via lakes and Ponds. Now we have to do the same in modern way through aquifer charging wells.

Aquifer charging wells: a modern way to fight against drought and flood-
An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials.
There are spaces beneath the Earth where the water gets stored and this is called the underground water. The underground water is one of the purest form of the water available to man. Underground water is decreasing because more water is taken out no water goes beneath the ground because of cemented construction everywhere, there is very less porous ground which can allow water to go inside the aquifer. We must build huge amount of lakes and ponds but in today’s time due to population growth it became quite impossible. So we left with only option making aquifer charging wells.

How to make it-
First we have to study the archaeology of that place. Then at the proper place wells should be made with the filter bed. So that the water could go underground after filtration. These wells do not take a lot of space so these are sustainable in modern time. The number of lakes and Ponds must be increased. Aquifer charging wells system not only stops floods but also provides water in the times of drought. This is a best way to save our future. The problem is that we are only thinking about today today's needs what will happen if water cycle isn't revived. Every house must have aquifer charging wells for the revitalization of the underground water. If most of the rainy water is directed towards underground to the Earth then there will be no excess water in the rivers that can cause flood. In this way so flood can be stopped and at the same time the water level with increased.

Conclusion-
There are few rivers which cause damage every year as the rainy season: like Kosi in Bihar, Periyar in Kerala, Alaknanda in Uttarakhand and Damodar in Bengal. These rivers shows what can nature really do, if we disturb its balance.
The underground water is reserved there for centuries. If we are wasting it blindly and decreasing its level. We are not only ruining our present but the future of our children. We must consider this fact in our mind as we move forward. With this modern technology we can revitalize the underground water, and in my opinion this is the best way to prevent drought as well as the flood all together.

Bus Strike in Uttarakhand

Bus Strike

It's been more than a week since the private buses of Uttarakhand are not running in any routes. Feels like the whole state of Uttarakhand is being held Hostage by the Union of Private Buses. Nearly about thousand people out of work due to this i.e bus drivers and bus conductors. Many  of the workers who go to factories to work are also suffering because of this. Neither  the government nor the bus union is concerned about the common man. Seems that there is no one to listen the problems of the common man. The common man suffers the most because  people from good families has several vehicles. It is the common man who waits for bus in the hot summer as well as in the cold winter.

Reason -
About a month back a bus of the Ramnagar route met an accident 61 people died. One of the main reason for accident was the overloading. After that government took an initiative and Ordered Bus Union not to overload otherwise they will be fined so the income from bus went down. Because now the number of passengers limited to the number of the seats and that's when the problem started. but in my opinion the main problem revolve around the money. Bus  union is asking to price hike of the tickets.

 Problem-
This causes the huge problem for the passengers because the number of buses is limited and with no overloading buses don't take all passenger. so they have to wait for a long time.
The second big problem is about the money. The price hike of the ticket will directly  impact the budget of a common man.
Due to this the auto drivers are stepping forward. They are carrying passengers but charging very high amount. Common man is helpless but to give them more than required money as fare. Because of the strike the Roadways  buses of Uttarakhand has much load to carry, but sometimes they don't stop for the local passengers because they already full. After some days of this the Roadways workers also went on strike.
Not only factory workers but also then school going children are not able to go to the school on daily basis.

 Effects-
This is directly affecting the GDP of Uttarakhand. There is no one taking any action about it as if the GDP of Uttarakhand in 2 digits. Everyone is struggling. The sales has been gone down. Small shopkeepers are so frustrated because no buses, no passenger, no sales
This is also affecting the environment. More two and four vehicles are running on the roads. The emission of carbon dioxide is increased the consumption of petrol is increased. This affects all not only the common man. This must be considered seriously.

 Solution-
Government and the Union has to sit together and make some fruitful decision in the favour of public. Because it's  public’s money they buy their food from. This shouldn't be forgotten neither by the government nor by the union.
If there is no overloading then the number of buses should be increased or the permit to the auto rickshaw be given. Because it will save time of public.
The price hike should be done considering only the common man travels in the buses.

 Conclusion-
The problem must be solved before it goes bigger. Any more loss of the business will break the backbone of the economy of Uttarakhand because the economy of Uttarakhand is mainly contributed by the bhabar and terai region. Any more time taken by the bus Union to take back the strike may sake the belief of the public in their services. This problem is so big that it's not only affecting the present but also the future of the Uttarakhand.
I believe in system it will solve the problem very soon.
